WHAT IS TREEMAKER?
Treemaker is a pledge programme for furniture makers, carpenters and builders to donate 1% of every job to a tree planting or tree protection not-for-profit of their choice.
This initiative, founded by Melbourne-based Sawdust Bureau and inspired by the Greta Thunberg-led 2019 Global Climate Strikes, is not about wearing an 'eco-warrior' badge of honour to make your business stand out as a point of difference, instead we believe this should be the bare minimum standard by which we all operate our businesses.
Whatever your own perspective on climate change, there is no debating that the world is losing forests, biodiversity and experiencing mass extinctions at unprecedented rates. Governments around the world are currently planting millions, billions, or, in some cases, trillions of trees to offset the impacts of climate change.
These positive intentions may turn out to be slightly misguided as a large percentage of the reforestation is in the form of mono-culture plantation forestry. While plantation timber is an important source of lumber for the construction industry, we need to look beyond single-species replanting and instead encourage a bio-diverse range of not-for-profits who focus on:
- planting suitable native species which will improve biodiversity and provide an improved habitat for wildlife and insects.
- reducing the effects of soil erosion and stabilising water run-off.
- supporting small-scale, community driven planting programmes.
- recognising that it is not just about large forests; think mangrove regeneration, wildflower planting etc...
